What to Expect
Hambantota Beach (16 km) — A 16 km stretch of pristine coastline. Duration: 4–5 hours for the full tour.
Hambantota Fish Market — Visit the fish market area where the 2004 tsunami submerged this city. About 2,000 people were swept to sea.
Magampura Museum — Explore the local museum showcasing the region’s history.
Martello Tower — Built in 1803 by Captain Gopher, a British military engineer. The Martello Tower claims to be one of the most beautifully shaped structures of its kind in the world. Two stories high, about 40 feet tall, with a circular base. Cannons were installed on top to fire at enemy ships.
Gallows Tree — A historic site from the colonial era.
Bird Park (15 USD entry) — Described as Asia’s largest bird park, home to over 3,200 birds of more than 180 endemic and exotic species. Birds can be viewed for about 2 hours. Bird Park Resort offers breakfast and lunch facilities.
Botanical Garden — A 300-acre botanical garden showcasing a diverse collection of plants, including rare and endangered species. Beautiful ornamental flowers can be viewed. About 1 hour to explore.
Buddhist Temple — A Buddhist religious site where anyone can observe and participate in Buddhist religious activities.
